Crystal Mountain
Thompsonville, Michigan
Crystal Mountain, one of Northern Michigan’s largest and most popular resorts, got its start in the unlikeliest of places… a local high school classroom. It was 1956. Ward Kreech, a geography teacher at Benzonia High School, gave his students an assignment: find the best place in Benzie County to create a ski area. From this unusual project, Buck Hills Ski Area (later named Crystal Mountain) was born.
From its beginnings, Crystal Mountain has always been a family-owned, community-focused operation. Today, the resort spans over 1,500 acres and offers top-notch skiing and snowboarding, along with a host of other outdoor winter activities, including biking, hiking, ice skating, laser tag, and more. Indoor winter activities include the award-winning, LEED-certified Crystal Spa and two TrackMan golf simulators.
After a full day of activities, relax with Crystal Mountain’s gracious on-site lodging and dining options, all within the walkable village. Choose from fully furnished townhomes, ski-in, ski-out bungalows, quaint cottages, or generously appointed hotel rooms and suites—perfect for couples, families, and groups alike.
Skiing at Crystal Mountain
A mountain for every skier and snowboarder, Crystal Mountain offers 59 downhill runs, three terrain parks, six chairlifts, and two magic carpets spread across more than 100 acres of skiable terrain with 375 feet of vertical. With a robust snowmaking system and plenty of lake effect snow from its proximity to Lake Michigan, conditions are designed for unforgettable days on the slopes. But it’s not just about the numbers—Crystal Mountain is where adventure becomes tradition and winter memories are made.
Beyond downhill skiing and riding, guests can enjoy 25 kilometers of cross-country ski trails groomed for both classic and skate skiing techniques. The Cross-Country Learning Center offers rental equipment and lessons for all ages, as well as retail, snowshoe rentals, and fat tire bike rentals.
