For an immersive winter recreation experience head to either Shanty Creek Resorts or Crystal Mountain. Located about 40 minutes north of Traverse City, Shanty Creek Resorts has 53 downhill slopes and six terrain parks, on two separate hills: Schuss Mountain and The Summit. Crystal Mountain is located about 45 minutes southwest of Traverse City and is home to 58 downhill trails, eight chairlifts across 102 skiable acres and three terrain parks. Both resorts have terrain to suit all ability levels from beginner to advanced.
The Mt. Holiday Ski & Recreation Area, just east of the city limits, provides hours of fun for the entire family, with skiing and snowboarding on 16 runs (beginner to advanced) and a snow tubing run with an express return lift.
Traverse City's favorite hometown ski area is Hickory Hills, located on the west side Slabtown neighborhood. This city-operated ski area offers eight downhill runs served by five rope tows. Slopes are beginner to advanced, with a 240-foot vertical drop.
