What could be better than sitting outside on a warm summer day (or well into the evening) sipping a glass of wine and taking in the breathtaking views of Grand Traverse Bay? We can’t think of much. The 40+ wineries and tasting rooms on the Old Mission and Leelanau Peninsula boast some of the most beautiful scenery in the country. Huge rolling hills are blanketed in acres of vineyards and fruit orchards -- including more than 2 ½ million cherry trees, earning Traverse City the designation of Cherry Capital of the World!
Early summer at the wineries brings the much-anticipated new releases from the prior year’s vintage, as well as several popular wine events. “Divas Uncorked” on the Old Mission Peninsula is a hugely popular girls-night-out “devoted entirely to women, wine, food and fun” each year in mid-June. Across West Grand Traverse Bay, the Leelanau Peninsula Wine Trail celebrates the season with its “Small Plates” event each August, pairing gourmet tapas with wine.
Both wine trails join in for some summer fun each June for the wildly popular Traverse City Wine and Art Festival on the sprawling lawn of the beautiful and historic Village at Grand Traverse Commons. Starting in the afternoon and stretching well into the evening, this not-to-be-missed event combines wine, food, art and live music .
