South Manitou Island-Sleeping Bear Dunes

  • About

South Manitou Island is suitable for day trips or camping excursions, with beaches, giant cedars, shipwrecks, a beautiful 1871 lighthouse and the farms of now-vanished settlers with farmsteads, a schoolhouse and a cemetery among the highlights. There are also 17 miles of hiking trails that wind around the island's many attractions. Stop by the Traverse City Tourism Visitor Center for a printed trail map or download a map from Michigan Trails Maps for a small fee.

Ferry transportation is provided by the Manitou Island Transit Co. in Leland, which also offers ninety-minute jeep tours on South Manitou.
