South Manitou Island is suitable for day trips or camping excursions, with beaches, giant cedars, shipwrecks, a beautiful 1871 lighthouse and the farms of now-vanished settlers with farmsteads, a schoolhouse and a cemetery among the highlights. There are also 17 miles of hiking trails that wind around the island's many attractions.
Ferry transportation is provided by the Manitou Island Transit Co. in Leland, which also offers ninety-minute jeep tours on South Manitou Island.
