Dynamic Variation:

Dougherty Mission House

  • About

The 1839 Chief Agosa of the Ottawa and Chippewa Indians requested Peter Dougherty to move to the peninsula to establish a mission church.  Rev. Peter Dougherty built the Mission House as a permanent structure in 1842 and is one of the very first frame buildings constructed in Grand Traverse County. Over the years, the house has been many things including a Presbyterian Mission, a farm where the peninsula fruit industry began, an Inn, a family home, and museum.

The Museum grounds feature 4 historic buildings, a demonstration garden, and a pavilion with 15 acres of trails that showcases rare pure American Chestnut trees.  Come discover its tie to the Old Mission Lighthouse and explore exhibits highlighting the Old Mission Agricultural Heritage.
