Biking in Summer

What better way to get some summer exercise than to get on that bike and enjoy some of the beautiful scenery of the Traverse City area? Just about any road on the scenic Leelanau or Old Mission peninsulas is great for biking, and the local trail network is just about the best you can get! Two of the best paved trails are the Traverse Area Recreation and Transportation (TART) Trail, whose signature trail is a 10.5-mile paved pathway that stretches east-west across the city, and the new Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail, a paved pathway between Glen Arbor and Empire.

For mountain bikers, there are plentiful dirt tracks, including the Sand Lakes Quiet Area and the Vasa Single-Track Trail Pathway. Other good off-the-beaten-path dirt trails are the Lost Lake Pathway (three loops of about two miles each) and the amazing Glacial Hills Pathway near Bellaire.
