After the long winter, spring brings eagerly-awaited new fruits and vegetables to the Traverse City area. First to appear are the light green spears of asparagus, the lettuces, spinach and radishes, and the rhubarb for the year's first pies. In the forests, the most delicious mushroom in the world -- the spring morel -- makes its appearance. Fortunately, there are also places where you can buy these tasty heralds of spring: the farmers markets in Traverse City are both open in May -- and in the village of Empire there's an entire festival dedicated to asparagus!
