Traverse City brewmasters are known for pushing the envelope when it comes to using unusual flavorings in their beers and ales. That may be one reason why Draft magazine named this small community one of America's three newest Emerging Beer Towns.
Emulating the region’s award-winning wine industry by their emphasis on local ingredients, craft brewers are suddenly multiplying across the Traverse City landscape. The area now boasts 17 microbreweries, brewpubs and craft brew taprooms! And Traverse City Beer Week in November has a whole week's worth of beer themed events.
The Old Mission and Leelanau peninsulas, already renowned for their acres of fruit trees and vineyards, are now growing hops. These fast-growing vines provide one of the key flavorings in beers and ales and are being snapped up by eager brewers.
If you'd rather have someone else do the driving during your microbrewery tour, you may want to take advantage of one of several tour companies in the area.
