Winter's cold and ice doesn't cool down the competitive instinct in Traverse City residents and visitors; if anything, they seem to rise to the challenge -- whether it's the cyclists who come from all over the world to compete in the grueling 25-mile Iceman Cometh Challenge race or the folks who get in shape for their Thanksgiving dinner by running the in the Downtown Traverse City Turkey Trot.
December brings the Farmland 5K European Style XC Challenge, a winter weather running and biking event on a classic turfgrass course with knee-high barriers that include straw bales, fallen logs, wood fence and stone fence. And by January the events take a decidedly winter turn with the BigFoot Snowshoe Race, the White PIne Stampede (Michigan’s longest and oldest point-to-point cross country ski race) and the North American Vasa Festival of Races, which includes 50k, 27k, 12k, and 6k races on the beautiful Vasa Pathway.
