Dynamic Variation:

Sporting Events & Races

Combine the beauty of a stunning natural backdrop with a community that has a passion for an active lifestyle and it's no wonder that Traverse City is host to a generous number of races year-round!

Summer race season begins in late June with the Glen Arbor Solstice Half-Marathon, a half marathon and 5k run/walk around Big Glen Lake and the lovely town of Glen Arbor. Then, as part of the National Cherry Festival in July, there's the Meijer Festival of Races, with a 5K run/walk and a 15k. It's not all for runners, either! In September, the IRONMAN 70.3 Michigan triathlon takes place in Frankfort.

With its cool weather and beautiful scenery, fall is also the season for runners and bikers. In October, there's the Sleeping Bear Marathon -- a scenic marathon and half-marathon in the heart of the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore -- and in November, there's the Iceman Cometh Challenge taking place on the challenging Vasa trail.

Winter's cold and ice doesn't cool down the competitive instinct in northern Michigan. December brings the Farmland 5K XC Challenge, a running and biking event on a course with barriers that includes straw bales and fallen logs. In January the events take a wintery turn with the North American Vasa Festival of Races, which includes 50k, 27k, 12k, and 6k races on the Vasa Pathway.
