Birding

In autumn, migratory birds pass through the Traverse City area on their long journey to their winter homes in the south. Migrating raptors can frequently be seen “kettling” on rising air currents near water, and local beaches become prime territory for off-season viewing of shorebirds, unusual gulls and terns, including the Black-Bellied Plover, Common Tern, Forster's Tern, Caspian Tern, and Bonaparte’s Gulls, as siskins, pine grosbeaks, redpolls and a large array of warblers make their way through the meadows and forests.

Traverse City itself is a year-round birding area, thanks to its location on the shore of Grand Traverse Bay and a significant number of parklands, preserves and greenways.
