Painters from across Michigan and the Midwest converge on Glen Arbor August 1st - 3rd for the Glen Arbor Arts Center’s 11th Plein Air Weekend. This annual event is highlighted by three outdoor painting competitions that offer participants both daytime and sundown events and two exhibits of original work.
The Sundowner, an evening painting event, gets the Plein Air Weekend started on Thursday, August 1st. Then, on Friday, August 2nd, artists paint their impressions of “Life Around the Glens” during the Quick Draw. The public is welcome to watch the artists in action. Finished Sundowner and Quick Draw paintings will be on view and for sale at the Glen Arbor Town Hall, 6394 W Western Avenue/M-22, on Friday, August 2nd from 5:00 PM to 6:30 PM. Linda Young, past Plein Air Weekend chairperson and museum educator retired from the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts, will judge the paintings. There will be cash prizes. The event is free and open to the public.
The weekend’s culminating event, the Paint Out Sale on Saturday, August 3rd features work by 65 artists who registered early to be included in this all-day painting event. The evening viewing and sale is from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM at the Glen Arbor Town Hall. The paintings are complemented by an appetizer and wine reception. More than 100 works of art will be exhibited and offered for sale on a first-come basis (at the sound of the gong at 5:45 PM). Petoskey painter, Heidi Marshall will judge and award cash prizes for the best paintings. A People’s Choice Award will also be given. The evening’s show and sale is a ticketed exhibition.
