As you’re traveling in and out of Traverse City please be aware of construction in the area. Below are sections of the region where road updates are happening.

Traffic is slow moving on M-72 from Downtown Kalkaska to the Grand Traverse County Line and will be under construction from April through November. The 7.7 mile stretch is currently down to one lane and is creating major issues for travelers moving up from Detroit or on their way out of the city. There are a few different ways to make it in and out of Traverse City and avoid the delay:

  1. If coming from Detroit: Follow I-75 and US-10 towards Clare. Take the exit for M-115 towards Cadillac, then merge onto US-131 North. You’re then going to continue onto M-113 W and make your way into Traverse City through whichever route is most convenient to where you’ll be staying

  2. Going to Kalkaska from Traverse City: Take US-31 to 3 Mile Road. At 3 Mile and Hammond take a left. Go past 4 Mile Road, up the hill and around a sweeping curve (High Lake Road) and turn left on Supply Road. Stay on it until it ends on South Boardman and turn left on US-131.

US-131 is under construction for 7.3 miles from Boardman Road to M-72/M-66 junction. Mostly one lane open under flag control.

  1. From Traverse City to US-131 South: Go out on Garfield Road until it ends in Kingsley (M-113). Turn left at the four way stop sign and continue until it ends (about 8 miles) on US-131.

  2. From Traverse City to US-131 North: Go out US-31 to 3 Mile Road. At 3 Mile and Hammond take a left. Go past 4 Mile Road, up the hill and around a sweeping curve (High Lake Road) and turn left on Supply Road. Stay on it until it ends on South Boardman. Turn onto US-131 North.

M-37 is under construction as they resurface 2 miles from Vance Road to North of Chums Corner. Most of the work will be done at night and some traffic shifts will be in place.

  1. To avoid it going south: Turn right from US-31 onto Rennie School Road. Follow it around back to US-31 and turn right. At the next intersection of US-31 and Sawyer Road, take a left. Continue two miles to Blair Townhall Road, turn left. Continue until you see the blinking light at US-31. Turn right and continue down US-31.

  2. To avoid it going north: Run the opposite of route stated above.
