Thanks to abundant sunshine over the weekend, the annual May blossoming of the cherries in orchards of the Traverse City area is under way – and it looks like it’s going to be a good one. Although we’re still probably a week away from a full-scale bloom, some orchards and sections are in full bloom already, depending on their site and the variety of cherries. (There are apricots, pears and plums in bloom as well.)

Many orchards along the entire length of the Old Mission Peninsula are already in bloom, and can best be viewed by driving along Center Road all the way to Mission Point. On the Leelanau Peninsula, orchards at higher elevations in the interior are seeing blossoms, too, according to the Northwest Michigan Horticultural Research Station in Bingham; County Road 633 between Traverse City and Suttons Bay is one good route for viewing them.
