They don’t call Traverse City a winter playground for nothing! Kids + snow just naturally equals fun. And where better to begin your winter adventure than at the area’s premier winter resort, Shanty Creek Resorts? Kids can ski or tube with Gandy Goose and then warm up with S’mores. And if you’re visiting over the holidays, families can hit the slopes with Santa Claus himself on Christmas Day! Sleigh rides, dogsled rides, snowshoeing and snowmobiling round out your winter outdoor fun choices at Shanty Creek.
But what if the day is a bit too cold and stormy to venture out? Glad you asked!
What could be more fun on a blustery winter day that cozying up with a big tub of popcorn and some cherry licorice and catching a kid-friendly flick at the historic State Theatre? Kids only pay 25 cents for Saturday morning movies, and if the local schools are closed for a Snow Day, movies are free! In February the Traverse City Winter Comedy Festival has plenty of kid-friendly events, too.
Are you a museum buff? For a fun way to learn about the Great Lakes, visit the Great Lakes Children’s Museum. Perfect for kids of all ages, get ready to roll up your sleeves and get wet, “steer” a Great Lakes freighter, or dress up like a lighthouse keeper! Stop by the Dennos Museum Center to experience a hands-on Discovery Gallery, or drive just north of Traverse City to the Music House Museum in Acme to see a collection of instruments spanning the late 18th century to the 1950s.
While in Acme, stop by Grand Traverse Resort and Spa’s Winter Golf Academy to hit a bucket of balls. Then burn off some more energy at Centre I.C.E. or Howe Arena (named after hockey great Gordie Howe) while enjoying open skate.
