Winter isn’t a sleepy season here in Michigan’s True North.
The busy pace of summer and fall has subsided, but the real winter attraction in Traverse City is outside. Each winter this gently sculpted landscape (carved 15,000 years ago by the last retreating glaciers of the Ice Age) is transformed into a magnet for skiers, snowmobilers and snowshoe hikers who consider this one of the country’s most beautiful winter destinations.
Downhill skiers will find several well-equipped ski slopes in the area, while Nordic ski enthusiasts will be positively ecstatic at the miles of groomed trails available to them. Snowshoers and snowmobilers also take to the woods with eagerness each winter -- and now they're being joined by a spirited cadre of fatbikers whose bicycles allow them to ride in the snow. And there's plenty of sledding, ice skating, iceboating and ice fishing, too!
