What could be more fun than buying a quart of deep red, sweet cherries at a roadside market, still cool from the spring water in which they were plunged right after they were picked? What could awaken your senses more quickly than tasting a golden, crisp and juicy apple just off the tree? Not many things.
Most of the award-winning fruits of the Traverse City Area -- cherries, peaches, apricots, nectarines, strawberries, raspberries and blackberries -- are ripe in mid to late summer. (Come to think of it, so are many of our best veggies.) Look for them at Traverse City's Sara Hardy farmers market or at any of the many farm market stands around the countryside. Even better, you might try picking some fruit yourself at a local U-Pick orchard. Standing among the trees with a glimpse of sparkling blue horizon visible between the heavy-laden branches, is a wonderful experience.
