Biking, Hiking & Skating

What better way to get some summer exercise than to take a hike, a cycling adventure or a skating trip surrounded by the beautiful scenery of the Traverse City area? Just about any road in scenic Leelanau County or on the Old Mission Peninsula is great for biking or skating, and the local trail network is just about the best you can get!

Two of the best trails for all three activities are the Traverse Area Recreation and Transportation (TART) Trail, whose signature trail is a 10.5-mile paved pathway that stretches east-west across the city, and the new Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail, a paved pathway between Glen Arbor and Empire.

For hikers and mountain bikers, there are plentiful dirt tracks, including the Sand Lakes Quiet Area and the Vasa Pathway. Other good off-the-beaten-path dirt trails are the Lost Lake Pathway (three loops of about two miles each) and the Lake Ann Pathway.
